The Youth Metropolitan Afterschool Connect project (Y-MAC), a collaboration between the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit and 5 urban-based public school academies, provides a rich and diverse range of academic, enrichment and recreational activities to the youth and families of the Detroit Metropolitan area.

At its core, the mission of Y-MAC is to provide rich and engaging youth and family programs, which assist students in positive personal development and growth – academically, physically, and socially. First and foremost, we embrace the Michigan State Board of Education’s goal of “Integrating Schools and Communities.” Further, we maintain an emphasis on attaining substantial and meaningful improvement in the academic achievement for all students, but especially those who are at-risk for failure, reside in areas with high concentrations of high-priority and failing schools, and come from families suffering severe levels of poverty and unemployment. The project offers activities in the following core areas: Academic Enrichment, Sports and Recreation, Mentoring and Leadership Development, Arts and Cultural Development, Y ARTS, and Special Family, Community and Day Camp events.

To date we have been awarded the grant for two cohort groups of five sites each.
